interview & exclusive: J▲W J▲M
Will Di Maggio is the man behind J▲W J▲M, one of the most interesting project of this 2012. We first heard about him via his sublime bootleg of Keyshia Cole’s song “Love”, one of those tunes you can’t stop playing; and when your listening to his sound in your room you suddenly find out you’re really digging it.
That was the moment when we decided to know more about this uprising flavored R&B producer, who accompanies us on walk through the future of this genre. In a short laps of time this guy has dropped a bunch of insane tunes, which show off his charming and rifined sound; smooth and colorful chopped vocals are perfectly modulated and integraded with the framework; sprightly synths build on a solid progression of piano chords accompanied by heavy 808′s; all things been done before, but what makes it unique is J▲W J▲M accurate and elaborate tact in choosing and processing the evolution of each elements in his tracks. J▲W J▲M gently gives you deep vibes that heat your blood circulation and make you want to jump off your seat and start a sinous dancing.
Below you can find the interview and his last creation “Rain”, in exclusive download via our Soundcloud. A glitch-out R&B track, which contains as usual graceful vocals, vibrant and buzzing synths and a very particular build-up of percussions in the form of “claps”. Check it out and try to not drum with your fingers… if you can.
1) Will DiMaggio a.k.a Jaw Jam, can you start by telling us more about yourself ?
Thanks for the interview. I’m 19 years old, originally from Princeton, NJ. I’ve been out in Ohio for the last two years studying at Oberlin College. I’ve been playing music my whole life but have only been producing tunes seriously for the last year or two. JAW JAM started this past winter during some time off for school.
2) Where does your alias come from?
I guess it’s a reference to the feeling you get when you’re enjoying tunes at a show. When you’re really vibing to something and you can’t help but smiling or dropping your jaw. I think it was more visually appealing to me though – I thought the name would look cool on graphics.
3) Describe us your musical development; what kind of music did you grow up with? What made you want to start making music?
I was exposed to a lot of different music as a kid. I’ve been playing piano since I was pretty young, so I naturally gravitated towards hip hop and jazz. In all honestly, though, I was only peripherally interested in jazz compared to punk and hardcore stuff. Most of the concerts I went to as a kid were hardcore shows. I only really got into electronic stuff mid-high school via some Mad Decent stuff out in Philadelphia and a couple spots in NYC. I had already been making weird hip hop stuff at the time, so that introduction shifted my focus towards electronic music. For a while I just tried to make club tunes, but eventually I gravitated back towards the r&b / hip hop sound that I was more familiar with. Thats essentially how my first Jaw Jam tune was made.
4) Your sound is oriented on one side to UK experimentalism garage and dub, but on the other one you sample lot of R&B stuff; how did come out with this dope combination between american and european influences? What do you think about the complex evolution of electronic music in the last years, that today leads us to a vast array of post-everything?
I never felt like I was doing anything particularly revolutionary. Most of the Garage / Post-dub stuff I listen to has pretty solid roots in R&B. I’m also a huge fan of older UKG and Bassline which generally take from classic R&B progressions. I think that I just wanted to put out some post-dub tunes that were less in the confines of conventional dubstep and more what I envisioned as a fresh take on a weird R&B song.
I really enjoy where electronic music is going today – especially because there are more central forums for the music – not only social networking sites, but things like Boiler Room , Red Bull Music Academy, etc. I think in that sense, some sub-scenes become particularly insular because everyone’s being influenced by the same crew of musicians. It ultimately pushes the music forward though, and really allows the scene to be so tight-knit… that’s what really attracted me to it all in the first place, and probably what allowed my tunes to become recognized in the first place.
5) Mention five artist from all the time that really impressed you.
As far as electronic music goes, I have a handful of favorite artists / labels at the moment.
Zed Bias / Phuturistix – been pumping out UKG tunes since the beginning of time
Groove Chronicles – Smooth R&B-influenced 2-step vibes from Noodles / El-B
Jam City – One of my top producers of all time. Fresh take on weirdo 80s synths.
RIP Productions – UKG anthems.
Unknown to the Unknown – had to mention this label – real old skool vibes from guys like Palace, DJ Haus, & DJ Q. 5kinandbone5′s – Make You Understand EP is a favorite.
6) We read that actually you defined Jaw Jam as a “small” project started during this past winter break, did you expected such a great positive feedback in such a short laps of time? How stimulant and rewarding is it for you ?
To be honest, I had no intention in getting any feedback for these tunes initially. I think because I rushed so much to put my first few tunes up, and had no real experience in mastering, I was so surprised that people gave me such great feedback. The recognition really inspired me to put out a few other tunes that month – maybe Jaw Jam was legitimized by the fact that I uploaded all of my tunes around the same time. It sorta gave off the vibe that I had been preparing for a big introduction or something, when in reality I was just working on a new tune every few days or so.
The recognition felt great though – I think making connections with other Djs and artists really prompted me to take JAW JAM seriously. I honestly couldn’t imagine that I would be sending my tunes to legitimate labels or guys like Disclosure last year – the whole experience is still a little unreal to me.
7) What is your appeal with your production, how do you built your tracks ? How everything starts in a normal studio session ? And which machines and programs do you work with?
I’ll generally start with a progression on the piano with some vocal sample in mind. I’ll then play it in Ableton and work from there. There’s no real formula for my productions though – I usually will work on a few songs, and end up stealing one chord progression or vocal loops from one tune and putting it over the structure of another. Most of my recent tunes have been the aggregation of (at least) a few different songs. A lot of times the process is pretty frustrating because I don’t follow any real formula, but I think it leaves room for innovation and generally allows for a more interesting end product.
8) World eletronic scene has recently focused more on 909 house,Chicago juke and experimental hip-hop from the west coast; what do you think about the increasing american influnce on eletronic music are you guys getting a little revenge on UK?
Haha, I’m definitely with it. I’m a huge fan of juke stuff, and love to see it being played out in the UK. The fact that UK guys have adopted the 808-heavy / footwork feel is really sick. I think the US has always influenced UK sound, and visa versa. I try to keep out of US / UK beef, it’s definitely a mutually beneficial relationship.
9) You have published on your soundcloud a full (unmastered) demo of the B-side of your debut EP “U Dont Know / Untitled”. Tell us more about it, when it will be out ? Are your working with a label ?
U Dont Know / Untitled is my first official EP. I have the mastered version of Untitled at this point, and am finishing up the a-side. I’ve sent the stems of Untitled around to a few great guys, including Obey City, Enchante, and Kon. Hopefully the the EP will be out within a month or so, and include both of my originals and three remixes. The EP will not be backed by a label officially, but will be promoted by Live For The Funk. It’ll be released digitally, probably for free. If everything goes well, I’ll try and press some vinyl of it for everyone involved in producing / mastering / promoting , as well as some of my friends and fellow Djs. At this point, it’s looking pretty small-scale.
10) Let’s finish talking about your early future , what are your plans? Are you working on new stuff ? We read that you’ll be featuring Bondax, XXYYXX, Sibian & Faun and probably the french 123mrk , how these collaborations started?
The artists that you are referring to are on a collaborative album being worked on currently. I don’t have much information about it, to be honest. I do have a fair amount of tunes coming out in the future though. Beyond my new EP, I’m currently working on remix of Yoin’s Tired of Me, forthcoming on Squelch & Clap. I’ve also got tentative plans to put out some tunes via Kastle’s new label, Symbols, and Tuff Wax out in Scotland. I also hope to play some shows around the States this summer, hopefully making it to the west coast with some buddies. In any case, expect to hear some more Jaw Jam tunes in the near future
Thanks to Jaw Jam for the interview.
Big up dude .
5) Menziona cinque artisti a te molto graditi.
Zed Bias, Phuturistix, Groove Chronicles, Jam City, Unknown to the Unknown.
E poi RIP Productions – UKG anthems.
Raccontaci qualcosa.
“U Dont Know/Untitled” è il mio primo EP ufficiale.
Stai lavorando a roba nuova?
